Trauma is not only an event, but an ongoing situation, over time, that causes emotional scars. These scars result in flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, paranoia, irritability, feelings of guilt, and isolation. It can result in problems with sleep, interpersonal relationships, concentration, and even keeping a job. It is often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and medications.
